Where to Stay in Lemnos: Myrina, Kaspakas & the Best Areas

Lemnos (or Limnos) is the eighth-largest island in Greece, with more than 250 kilometres of coastline and a fraction of the crowds you will find in the Cyclades. Because it is large and gloriously unhurried, where you choose to base yourself shapes your entire holiday — from sunset swims to long dinners by the harbour.

This guide walks through the island's main areas — the capital Myrina, the west-coast villages of Kaspakas and Agios Ioannis, the family beaches of the south, and the wild east and north — so you can pick the base that suits your trip.

Myrina — The Island's Capital

Myrina is the heart of Lemnos: a handsome port town crowned by the largest Byzantine castle in the Aegean. Below the castle, the Romeikos Gialos waterfront is lined with neoclassical mansions, cafés and fish tavernas, while the old town's stone lanes hide bakeries, wine shops and family-run restaurants.

Myrina is also where the ferries dock, making it the most convenient base if you arrive by sea or prefer not to drive far for dinner. Two town beaches — Romeikos Gialos and the shallow, child-friendly Riha Nera — are within walking distance.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, travellers without a car, dining and evening atmosphere
  • Highlights: Myrina Castle, the harbour, waterfront tavernas, easy ferry access

Kaspakas & Agios Ioannis — The West Coast

A short drive north of Myrina, the traditional village of Kaspakas spills down a green hillside above one of the island's loveliest bays. Just 1.5 kilometres below sits Agios Ioannis, a Blue Flag beach of soft sand famous for the taverna built into its volcanic rocks — and, because this is the west coast, for some of the best sunsets on Lemnos.

This is the quiet, authentic side of the island: close enough to Myrina (about 6 kilometres) for everything you need, yet far enough to feel like a true escape. It is where our own villas are located, chosen precisely for this balance of seclusion and convenience.

  • Best for: couples, families seeking tranquillity, sunset lovers
  • Highlights: Agios Ioannis Blue Flag beach, the rock taverna, west-facing sunsets

Platy & Thanos — South of Myrina

Just south of the capital, Platy and Thanos are two of the island's most popular beaches, both flying the Blue Flag. Platy offers a long sweep of golden sand with sunbeds, beach bars and watersports a couple of kilometres from town; Thanos, a little further on, is wilder and more scenic, with white sand framed by dark volcanic cliffs.

The villages behind the beaches have rooms, tavernas and a relaxed, family-friendly feel, making this stretch a comfortable middle ground between Myrina's buzz and the west coast's calm.

  • Best for: families, beach days close to town
  • Highlights: Blue Flag Platy and Thanos beaches, watersports, easy access

The East & North — Off the Beaten Path

The east and north of Lemnos reward those willing to explore. Keros Bay, on the east coast, is one of Greece's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing spots thanks to its reliable summer winds and long shallow shore. To the north, the vast sand dunes of Gomati feel like a desert meeting the Aegean.

This part of the island is also rich in history — the prehistoric city of Poliochni and the ancient sites of Hephaistia and the Kabeirion are all here. A car is essential, but the sense of discovery is unmatched.

  • Best for: explorers, windsurfers, history enthusiasts
  • Highlights: Keros Bay, Gomati dunes, Poliochni, ancient Hephaistia

Getting Around the Island

Lemnos is spread out, and public transport is limited, so renting a car is the easiest way to enjoy it — distances are short and the roads are quiet. The airport lies about 22 kilometres east of Myrina, and most of the western beaches and villages are within a 15-minute drive of the capital.

If you would rather not drive much, basing yourself in or near Myrina keeps restaurants, shops and beaches within easy reach, with day trips by car or taxi for the more distant sights.
